Why should I spend any of my limited holiday time doing Christian work? "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few" (Matthew 9:37) - go and help out with God's harvest for a week. "I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God" (Romans 12: 1) - serve God out of gratitude for the mercy he has shown you. Why should I do a camp rather than serve Christ in some other way? There are many excellent ways to serve Christ - that you serve is more important than how or where you serve. But here's why it's great to help on a venture ... Camps give children and young people an opportunity to hear clear truths about Jesus Christ in the context of a great holiday. Camps often attract children from non-church backgrounds who would not usually hear the gospel, as well as children from Christian families who need to hear the Gospel challenge in an environment removed from their comfort zones. Camps enable leaders to develop their gifts in a range of different areas, whether leading Bible studies, giving talks, speaking to people one-to-one about Jesus. Many leaders come to camp with no experience of these and return to their churches equipped to help in new ways. Why should I do one of the Romsey ventures rather than any other? There are many excellent ventures and you'd be able to serve God on any one of them. But here's why we think Romsey is special ... Romsey caters for children aged 11 - 14, i.e. old enough to have started thinking seriously about major issues but not yet (in most cases) hardened and cynical. We have two excellent sites with good locations, enabling us to run a range of first-class activities on and off site. We have a major emphasis on relationship-based discipleship, with every Pathfinder being given the chance to talk to a leader one-to-one some time during camp. We attract children from both churched and unchurched backgrounds and from a range of social settings - not just middle-class kids! We have an experienced team but recruit from a fairly small base - we don't have a mailing list of hundreds of potential leaders to draw from - so we need you! If I say yes, what am I committing myself to? Initially, nothing more than getting a phone call from one of the Venture leaders (Andrew McClellan, James Pontin or Chris Watson-Lee). But if that doesn't put you off... We ask you to attending the training day in June and a weekend reunion the following January, plus one week on camp. Leaders do not have to pay camp fees, though we invite donations according to your ability to pay. What are the needs? We need Christian disciples, male and female, young and old, single and married, extrovert and introvert, experienced or first-time campers, who want to serve God as part of a team. We need people to run indoor and outdoor games, music, craft. We need people who can be trained to lead Bible studies in small groups or one-to-one. We need experienced speakers and dorm. team leaders, as well as people with no experience of any kind of Christian work. We need strong swimmers who are prepared to train as lifeguards. We need a doctor or nurse. We need cooks. We need administrative support of various kinds including financial and logistics. We need people who are prepared to try doing things they haven't done before. What's my next step? Check out the evidence!
