ETHOS OF THE HOME
Green
Gables Nursing Home was established in 1987. It is a purpose-built Nursing Home
set in the heart of the village of Grayshott, which is situated close to the
A3.
We
aim to provide all of our Residents with a high standard of care in a secure,
relaxed and homely environment. Our aim is reflected in our Philosophy of Care
which recognises the individual rights of service users and encourages:
¥ Privacy
¥ Dignity
¥ Choice
¥ Self
Esteem
¥ Fulfilment/Opportunity
¥ Independence
¥ Spirituality
These
are reflected in every aspect of health and personal care, daily life and
social activities, environment, staffing and the administration of the home.
We
wish to work in partnership with Residents to maintain dignity, individuality
and privacy and strive to be sensitive to their changing physical and emotional
needs. Service users, their family and friends are encouraged to be fully
involved in planning care and if appropriate, care delivery.
Partnership
in the social activities and daily life of our home and local community is
encouraged and valued.
The
social activities coordinator, in discussion with each Resident, develops an
activities programme reflecting individual interests. Social events and outings
are advertised throughout the home.
All
of our staff are qualified to deliver the highest standard of care and are
supported by a continuous training programme encouraging innovative best
practise. We encourage the care team and our housekeeping and catering staff to
take vocational and other qualifications to promote a high standard of care and
service. Staff are aware of current legislation and registration authority
guidelines in forming best practice and work in partnership with Health and
Social Services and the Commission for Social Care Inspection achieve the highest
of care for our Service Users. We share and exchange knowledge with all
agencies caring for older people and aim to be receptive to future practice
development in our efforts towards continuous improvement.
GENERAL INFORMATION
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Service
users are accepted for admission after a nursing needs assessment has been
completed by Social Services. The prospective service user is also visited by
the Matron or her delegate to determine their suitability. Relatives are also
asked to visit the Home to determine if they are satisfied with the care that
is provided before their relative is admitted.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
The
Home has a full-time activities coordinator, who alongside Matron assesses each
residents capabilities in taking part in activities. Their past hobbies and
leisure interests are taken into account, and relatives may also be included in
the initial discussions with service users. Service users are consulted monthly
on which activities they would like to do. Aromatherapy is available to all our
Residents, and this is supervised by the Activities Coordinator.
FIRE PRECAUTIONS
We
adhere to the normal fire regulations for Nursing Homes and all of our staff
attend regular fire safety lectures and fire drills. There are procedures in place
in the event of an emergency.
RELIGION
Service
users are asked if they wish to go to church or attend the regular services
organised in the Nursing Home during their initial assessment. Service users
can also have their minister of religion visit at any time they wish.
VISITING TIMES
Relatives
of service users are free to visit at any time of the day. They are
asked to avoid meal times if possible, but are very welcome if they wish to
help with feeding their relative. Service users are also encouraged to maintain
contact with their friends and family and are also encouraged to visit their
family providing they are well enough.
COMPLAINTS
The
Home has a robust complaints procedure in place, details of which can be found
in the brochure, on the website, and in the entrance hall of the Home.
Residents and relatives are supported in contacting the Commission for Social
Care Inspection if they feel this action is appropriate.
FACILITIES AND SERVICES TO BE PROVIDED
TELEPHONES
The
Home provides appropriate telephone facilities, which are situated in MatronÕs
office (there is a cordless extension to this line for service users wishing to
receive calls) There is also a pay phone in the main entrance hall for service
users and visitors to the Home. Service users can also have their own telephone
line installed into their own room. The cost of this is the responsibility of
the service user or their family.
FURNITURE
Rooms
are provided with a bed, wardrobe, bedside locker, arm chair, adequate
curtains, screens and flooring, wash hand basin and a commode where required.
LAUNDRY
All
service users clothes are laundered at no extra cost and bed linen is sent out
to a contracted company. It is recommended that all clothes should be marked
clearly with the service users initials, this is to ensure that the clothes are
returned correctly after laundering.
MEAL TIMES
Meals
are provided in adequate suitable quantities and are wholesome and nutritious.
The menus are varied and properly prepared and are available to service users
when required.
DISPOSAL OF WASTE
Arrangements
are in place for the disposal of general waste and clinical waste and the home
is kept free from odours at all times as far as is possible.
SAFE KEEPING
A
safe is provided where service users can deposit money and valuables for safe
keeping. A record is kept of all deposits by the administrator.
REVIEW OF CARE
The
service users care plan is reviewed monthly after liaising with the service
user and their family wherever this is appropriate.
ROOM SIZES
There
are fifteen shared rooms and eight single rooms of adequate size, according to
the Commission for Social Care Inspection. Further details are available in our
CSCI inspection report, viewable at the Home and on our website.
THE RIGHTS OF RESIDENTS
The
rights of our Residents are recognised and supported within our Philosophy of
Care which emphasises the right of the individual to live their life to the
fullest potential. This extends to medical services and the Residents are given
a choice of Medical Practitioner when they are admitted to Green Gables.
The
privacy and dignity of all service users is respected at all times. Screens are
used in shared rooms and service users are taken to their rooms if they wish to
spend time with their relatives in private. Service users are treated with the
greatest dignity and privacy when bathing and dressing. Where possible, they
are consulted in matters of importance e.g. care and matters that concern the
service user as a whole.
Their wishes are always respected.
Their views are taken into account at all times.
Staff
regard Residents as real people with their own desires, hopes, and expectations
irrespective of sex, religion, racial origin or any cultural or linguistic
background. To assist Residents to exercise their rights we can arrange an
advocate if required. We promote Residents' rights through the care and
services that we provide, and encourage all those Residents to exercise their
rights to the full.
All
Residents or their representatives are required to sign a contract prior to
admission agreeing to the terms and conditions set out in the contract. This
will include:
¥ Room
to be Occupied.
¥ Overall
care and services including fees payable and by whom.
¥ Additional
services to be paid including those over and above those included in the fee.
¥ Rights

notified of any potential increases.
